The School of Education and Leadership, University of Ghana, on 30 October 2026, organised a training session for university lecturers on the effective implementation of the new Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Curriculum. The training was part of an initiative led by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which has developed ten training modules to support lecturers in understanding and effectively implementing the new curriculum.
The training brought together lecturers and education stakeholders to strengthen their understanding of contemporary approaches to teacher preparation and to promote effective implementation of the new B.Ed. curriculum. The session focused on two of the ten GTEC training modules: Learner-Centred Pedagogy and Partnerships with Industry and Community.
The Learner-Centred Pedagogy module focused on approaches that place learners at the centre of the teaching and learning process. Participants explored strategies for moving beyond predominantly teacher-directed approaches towards pedagogies that encourage active participation, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving and meaningful engagement in learning. The session also highlighted the role of university lecturers in modelling learner-centred practices that student teachers can subsequently apply in their own classrooms.
The second module, Partnerships with Industry and Community, examined the importance of establishing meaningful connections between teacher education institutions, industry and the wider community. Participants considered how such partnerships can enhance the relevance of teacher preparation, provide opportunities for authentic learning experiences, strengthen professional competencies and create stronger links between university-based learning and the contexts in which teachers will eventually work.
The training provided an opportunity for lecturers to engage in professional dialogue, share experiences and reflect on practical ways of integrating the principles of the new B.Ed. curriculum into their teaching and teacher-preparation programmes. It also underscored the importance of collaboration among tertiary institutions, schools, industry and communities in preparing teachers who are responsive to the changing demands of education.
The School of Education and Leadership remains committed to supporting the continuous professional development of lecturers and strengthening the quality of teacher education at the University of Ghana. The training represents an important step towards ensuring that lecturers are adequately equipped to support the effective implementation of the new B.Ed. curriculum and, ultimately, contribute to the preparation of competent and innovative teachers for Senior High Schools in Ghana.
